Asteroid names for our Neorockers
The Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature (WG-SBN) has responsibility, under the authority of the IAU, for the names of small bodies in the Solar System.
When a new asteroid is discovered, the Minor Planet Center (MPC) gives it a provisional designation. When the orbit is confirmed, throughout new observations, MPC gets to the object a permanent numerical designation and the discoverer can suggest a name for it, giving a brief justification. If the WG-SBN approves the name, it is published it in a monthly newsletter.
The IAU reserves the right to accept further names deemed particularly deserving: this is the case of the traditional series of planetary astronomers solicited and presented during the Asteroids, Comets, Meteors (ACM) meetings held every 3 years by scientists who study small bodies. In this case, the IAU solicits astronomers to submit candidates as Asteroid Name Recipients to WG-SBN.
The latest ACM2023 meeting was held in Flagstaff (AZ) from June 18 to 23 and several NEOROCKers were included among the Asteroid Name Recipients.
Here below the list of their names (in alphabetic order):
– Petr Fatka: (113210) Petrfatka
– Simone Ieva: 32516 Simoneieva
– Elena Mazzotta Epifani: (32399) Epifani
– Alexey Sergeyev: (33931) Alexeysergeyev
– Angelo Zinzi: (34775) Zinzi
Congratulations to all our colleagues! Ad maiora!
